From the Master Work Series

A sunset both energizing and peaceful, awe-inspiring and grounding all at once. This Masterwork was created in response to a painting by Gabriele Munter — a painting I saw by happenstance, whose work wasn’t really known to me, but in one glance whose colors and shapes demanded to be explored in my own materials, with my own memory.

It holds an interesting place in the this collection - it isn’t specifically desert; but the sunset feels like something I know, which is the whole intention behind the Masterwork Series, connecting into something universal…something home.

It’s the kind of sunset that electrifies you, almost ominous in its power, while at the same time holding you in deep peace. The red feels charged, alive — and yet it grounds you. The green beside it makes the red vibrate even more. Every time I look at it, even in memory, I feel electricity run through my body — a reminder of how the universe can hold you in its beauty, vast and powerful, all within a fleeting moment.

Though one of the smallest works in this collection, its impact is far larger. I nearly kept it for myself! This piece is both homage and threshold: a tribute to Gabriele, and a step into a new color language. I know it’s influence will fold into my larger works, especially desert sunsets.
